General Information:

* There are 6 internship positions available, 3 in the New York office and one in each of the 3 field offices (Baltimore, Portland and St. Paul).

* Partners should nominate one alumni each and ask the nominee to complete the form attached below and review the job descriptions.

* Preferred Start/End dates: Mid-June to end of August. (End-of-stay orientation begins 30 June and Arrival orientation ends August 12th. Alumni assigned to the New York and possibly Baltimore office should expect to be assisting with both orientations)

* AFS will cover: international travel and local travel/mass transit in their host communities, finding accommodations (host families) for the summer. Alumni should expect to cover: spending money for meals, incidentals and personal use

New York National Service Center

Within AFS-USA, the Sponsored Programs Department works with the Department of State and several US-based exchange organizations on several public diplomacy initiatives that are designed to promote peace and understanding between the United States and the exchange countries. In many ways, the participants serve as ambassadors to build bridges of understanding between the US and their hosting countries. AFS-USA has been awarded grants by the U.S. State Department as well as by several private foundations to implement these special public diplomacy scholarship programs. Students and teachers participate in AFS programs both here in the United States as well as in our partner countries.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Sponsored Programs New York Summer Intern contributes to a variety of projects and events taking place during the summer months.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Orientation support:
Assist with several participant orientations, both sending and hosting, taking place in Washington DC and various Gateways. Responsibilities include: assisting in the arranging of Congressional appointments, assisting with pre-event planning and organizing, including travel and logistics, nametags, coordinating and mailing event supplies, etc.; providing general on-site logistical and technical support to the orientations’ staff, participants and volunteers (examples include: registration, ticket administration and general trouble shooting), airport duty assisting with arriving and departing participants
Serve as a cultural resource both prior to and during the orientations.
Contribute an alumni viewpoint to the orientation content and contribute to analysis of orientations effectiveness with aim of improving future orientations.
Other duties as assigned.

Culture and program-specific resources:
Work with Program Specialists to update culture and program specific reference tools and resources used by staff and local representatives.

Alumni projects:
Gather alumni news and stories for the websites.
Develop and implement creative on-line initiatives for YES alumni and students
Support Project Manager in getting alumni registered on the site.
Support Project Manager in planning and implementation of alumni events
Gather input from alumni that will assist in the further development of the website.
Other assistance as assigned.

Other Duties as Assigned:
Support efforts to define and craft materials and messages to support hosting and sending initiatives
Participate in team meetings and travel with team as needed for orientations

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to work well under pressure
Detail oriented and organized
Flexible
Responsible, mature
Works well with people, possesses a good phone manner
Be an active alumna/us of a Sponsored Program.
Demonstrated commitment to serving their community, AFS/YES and YES alumni development
Good basic computer skills: Word, Excel
Event planning experiences a plus.
Experience working in an AFS orientation setting a plus.
Position is full time beginning mid-June through end of August (many weekends and evenings).
